Drawn from Nature: The Exotic / 5 Week Course
An exotic ‘nature table’ will form the focus for this five-week course from Birds-of-Paradise feathers and whale’s teeth to tropical flowers. As well as drawing from natural objects and artefacts in the studio, and the odd rare live animal, the course will visit the V&A, London Zoo and the Grant Zoology Museum. We will explore Blake’s ontological poetry as well as Dürer and Ruskin and the ‘paper museums’ and ‘cabinets of curiosity’ of the Enlightenment Period. As Ruskin famously said, ‘if you can paint one leaf, you can paint the world.’ Students will experiment with different materials including watercolour, ink, collage and printmaking. Learning through observational drawing, to depict the ‘specimen’ or ‘artefact‘ will help students in the wider context of drawing and painting still lifes and understanding composition, proportions, textures and details. Students will be encouraged to develop these skills into more interpretive and experimental representations.
