Sculpture: Painters in the Third Dimension

This course looks at the dramatic relationship that exists between painters and their use of sculpture. How this has led to extraordinary paintings whilst at the same time has created incredible developments in the art of sculpture. Our cast members will be: Poussin, Tintoretto, El Greco, Degas, Daumier, Picasso, Boccioni, Matisse, Kirchner, Giacometti, Ensor, Paula Rego, and others...

This course can assist both painters and sculptors and people who draw. Sculptors can gain insight into the possibilities of narrative, light, surface, and composition, aiding sensitivity to the illusion and image of what is sculpted. For painters and drawers the fundamental relationship with the three dimensional world and its creative assistance in a painting or drawing will be experienced as well as the devices and ways of thinking that helped achieve this. We will aim to follow painters throughout the history of art who used sculpture as part of their process. Through sculpting and drawing we hope to find inspiration and new possibilities in our area of interest. Suitable for both beginners as well as those with a more established practice.
