Drawing Year alumna Nell Brookfield is currently studying at the Pratt Institute in New York. In December 2019 she visited artist Philemona Williamson in her studio in East Orange, New Jersey.

Here is the recording of the conversation the two had together whilst sitting in Williamson’s studio surrounded by the artist’s work, and all the materials she has collected for painterly inspiration. Their conversation touches on Williamson’s process, unpicks why she paints around the theme of childhood, her background, vulnerability, painting techniques, and what advice she might offer young art students today.
