Sessions included in this pass:
Tuesday 6 May, 18.30 - 20.30 - Exploring Line
Drawing could be described as the act of making a line. In this two-hour life drawing session, we will explore that basic act, looking in detail at how we use line in all its forms, supported by reference images from artists who have done the same in their own practices.
Led by tutor Fraser Scarfe, we will begin with short poses, focusing on our basic drawing vocabulary, enjoying the act of mark making and how those marks can describe the human form. The session will then culminate in a longer pose, giving participants the chance to create a sustained drawing from the whole figure.
Camera and visual effects will be used to enhance the drawing experience, allowing us to follow the form of the figure in close detail and through sustained close-ups. All levels welcome.
Tuesday 13 May, 18.30 - 20.30 - Drawing a Story
In this two-hour life drawing session, myth and storytelling will open the imaginative mind. Tutor Mark Cazalet will show how the interplay of model and well-chosen words can result in a more poetic way of drawing. This session will explore how storytelling in art allows us to cover a wide range of expressive forms of drawing. All levels welcome.
Tuesday 20 May, 18.30 - 20.30 - Capturing Light
In this two-hour life drawing session, tutor Katy Papineau will guide you through drawing a figure posed in different kinds of light. Using colour materials on coloured paper, you'll explore the qualities of sunlight throughout the day. From the vibrant intensity of midday sun to the soft hues of the evening's golden hour, you'll learn to portray the dynamic and ever-changing light of summer. Drawing inspiration from art and film, we'll illuminate our model in ways that evoke the joy and warmth of summer days. All levels welcome.
Tuesday 27 May, 18.30 - 20.30 - Drawing Canines
In this session led by artist and tutor Hira Gedikoglu, students will have the unique opportunity to draw from real dogs while exploring the rich folklore and mythologies surrounding them. Dogs have long held a powerful place in storytelling across cultures, often appearing as guardians, guides, and companions in moments of transition. This workshop will weave together observational drawing and narrative tradition, inviting students to consider the symbolic resonance of dogs while developing skills to capture their form, movement, and spirit. All levels welcome.
Tuesday 3 June, 18.30 - 20.30 - Drawing Human Anatomy
In this two-hour life drawing session, we will concentrate on the structure of the body with the intention of developing our understanding of how the mechanics of the human form connect and interact.
Through looking at anatomical reference drawings, tutor Marcus Cornish will demonstrate how these internal systems manifest themselves on the surface of the body, and how an understanding of anatomy can help give life to our drawings. All levels welcome.
Tuesday 10 June, 18.30 - 20.30 - Life Drawing: Unexpected Compositions
In this two-hour life drawing session, students will focus on composition, bringing multiple elements together to create something unexpected. Led by tutor Harry Parker, students will create compelling compositions from drawing a live model and still life elements. A range of digital processes and specialist equipment will be used in the session to help create these unexpected composites. All levels welcome.
Tuesday 17 June, 18.30 - 20.30 - Life Drawing: Drawing Life
In this two-hour life drawing session led by tutor Dilip Sur, students will explore drawing as a practice of inquiry, exploration and discovery, a way to encounter a deeper sense of self. The session invites concentration, contemplation and courageous engagement with the subject before us. Working with a live model in a range of short and long poses, students will develop their observational drawing skills while also exploring imagination and personal interpretation through Dilip’s expert guidance. This is a relaxed, exploratory session suitable for all levels of experience.
Tuesday 24 June, 18.30 - 20.30 - Life Drawing in Colour
In this life drawing session, led by tutor David Gardner, we will explore the interplay of artificial lighting, using its glow to bring new dimensions to our work.
From Caravaggio's dramatic chiaroscuro lighting to Lucas Samaras' colourful staging for his Polaroid series, as well as Euan Uglow's nighttime paintings - we will look at how artists have used new and exciting ways to illuminate and rethink the human form.
Using coloured spotlights, we’ll cast the model in opposing colours - particularly exploring the dynamic between pinks and greens. Let's see what kind of transformative qualities these spotlights of colour will have on human form. All levels welcome
