Drawing from the National Gallery and Beyond

In this course you will experience an in-depth analysis of the historical background, materials and processes employed by the old masters from collections such as The National Gallery, The Prado, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Uffizi Galleries and more. Unlike the familiar experience of hurrying through exhibitions, you will have time to enter into a deep study of one or two key paintings each day and experience sustained encounters with the artists who made them. We will make drawn transcriptions from a selection of the renowned and less well-known masterpieces from artists including Dürer, Poussin, Cezanne, Zurbarán, Degas, Titian, Giovanni di Paolo and Mantegna.  This procedure of drawing directly from the classical tradition has always been the bedrock of art education, enabling you to understand the technical and emotional legacy of some of the greatest creative minds. When drawing these works, ideas will spring to mind and structure, colour and composition will reveal itself, allowing you to take valuable insights into your own studio practice. You do not need any specific art background to join but enthusiasm and a willingness to reflect are essential.

Before each session tutors will send you a brief précis of the themes, artists’ paintings to be studied and sometimes specific materials for you to prepare. There will be opportunities to hold conversations within the group before and after the one-hour lunch break. At the close of the day there will be an open plenary session to share the drawings done and discuss our responses to them and the paintings. All levels of experience are welcome.
