Stop frame animation has an extraordinary ability to unlock the imagination. The process of putting down an image, taking a photo, rubbing part or all of it out to replace it with another and doing this continuously can bring to surface imagery hitherto buried, making it an ideal source for material to develop within a personal artistic practice, as well as an art form in its own right.

In this ten-week course students will learn the basics of animation, drawing in flipbooks from observation, metamorphosing objects and moving through three-dimensional space. We will work from a life model online drawing simple sequences inspired by Degas and the photographer Edward Muybridge, and explore techniques and materials including paper cut outs, animated objects, plasticine, sand, charcoal on paper, gouache paint on glass and the interaction of changing images with sound. Each session students will look at the work of relevant animators including William Kentridge, Len Lye, Norman Mclaren, BLU, Tezuka Osamu and Jan Svankmajer for inspiration and technical guidance.

Once familiarised with the concept of stop frame animation students will have the chance to focus on a more fully realised personal animation which could take the form of an accompaniment to music, a documentary, an intervention in a space or the telling of a story.

For this course students need a computer or laptop, a basic animation programme such as iStopMotion, a camera and a tripod. A list of drawing materials will be provided. No prior knowledge of stop frame animation is necessary. All levels welcome, including beginners.
