Artists on Film: Seeing Through Drawing
Directed by Mike Dibb, 1978, 120 min
In 1972 Mike Dibb produced a four-part series of 30 minute films called Ways of Seeing, now regarded not only as ‘a landmark work of British arts broadcasting, but as a key moment in the democratisation of art education’. Scripted by writer John Berger, Ways of Seeing won a BAFTA Award for Best Specialised Series, and was later the basis for the bestselling book of the same name. The film that followed in the wake of this success was Seeing Through Drawing, a two hour film about the meaning of drawing featuring, among others, David Hockney, Jim Dine, Ralph Steadman and art historian Philip Rawson. The director will be in attendance at this screening and give a short introduction to the film.
