Chris Riopelle – Ingres’s Portraits, Drawn and Painted
J-A-D Ingres was unusual in following two distinct portrait practices. He accepted relatively few commissions for painted portraits, and the results were achieved slowly and meticulously, often over several years. He accepted hundreds of commissions for portrait drawings, and drew as many again of friends and family. They are no less meticulous, executed with marvellous technical virtuosity but often in the space of a few hours. This talk compares the two modes and asks how speed or slowness of execution affected the results.
