John Davies in-conversation with William Feaver
John Davies was born in Cheshire in 1946 and is a sculptor, who draws every day. He attended Hull and Manchester Colleges of Art and later moved to the Slade, London before winning a sculpture fellowship at Gloucester College of Art. Davies’ practice mainly focuses on the depiction of the human figure, with works often installed in groups to suggest particular relationships. He is noted for the fine details in his sculpture, which bring further human emotion to the work. His first major exhibition took place at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1972, where he exhibited again in 1975. Other exhibitions include the 8th Biennale de Paris in 1973; Documenta VI in Kassel, Germany; 3rd Sydney Biennale in 1979, The Hard-Won Image at Tate Gallery in 1984; a major exhibition at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in 1985 and a retrospective at the Museu de Bellas Artes de Bilbao and Insitut Valencià d’Art Modern in 2004-5. He won the Sainsbury Award in 1990 with work held by the British Council Collection, Arts Council England Collection and Tate Gallery. After relocating to Greece in the mid 1990s, Davies is now based in Kent.
