A step-by-step guide to help you prepare and submit your application.

We understand that submitting applications can be stressful. This checklist is designed to help you track your progress so you can submit on time with confidence. 

We also outline what to expect when applications close, and where to find additional information before you apply.

1. Start your application

The Drawing Year applications are submitted online. If you haven't yet already, start an application to organise your submission.  

Applications comprise: 

  • Applicant personal and education information  
  • A personal statement 
  • References 
  • A digital portfolio 
  • Sketchbook submissions

We outline what you need to prepare for each element below. 

2. Write your personal statement 

  • Up to 500 words (max. 3000 characters)
  • Tell us about your current creative practice 
  • Include why you believe the programme is right for you 

3. Select your referees

You will need the contact details for two referees who can give either an academic or character reference related to your artistic practice.

Referees will only be contacted if you are invited for an interview.  

4. Prepare your digital portfolio 

You will need to upload 20 media files in total: 

  • 10 drawings — dry media, ink, or watercolour 
  • 10 additional works — in any medium 

Portfolio file requirements include: 

  • JPEG or PNG (max 5MB per image) 
  • If relevant, video files must be max. 2 mins and no larger than 250MB 
  • Include good quality images that have been created within the last 3 years 

Please label your media in the applicant portal as follows:

Title_medium_year_dimension/duration_category ('Drawing' or 'Additional Work')

Dimensions should be listed in centimetres.

Shortlisted applicants must bring these works, along with additional works and sketchbooks to the interview.

5. Organise your sketchbooks

Applicants should submit two sketchbooks as part of their application.

There are three ways to submit your sketchbook: in person, by post or online.

6. Submit by the deadline 

Applications for The Drawing Year close on Wednesday, 1 April at midnight

What happens next?

After your application has been submitted, and the application window has closed: 

  • Your application will be reviewed by a panel of practicing artists 
  • Shortlisted applicants will be contacted a few weeks after the application deadline and invited for interview. 
  • Interviews will take place in May 2026
  • Applicants must bring their physical portfolio and sketchbooks
  • Additional work not included in the digital application may also be presented
  • Candidates will discuss the role of drawing in their practice and how The Drawing Year would support their development
  • Applicants will receive a decision within one week of their interview
