Biography
Johanna Zhang’s paintings can be seen as conversation pieces that explore non-verbal communication between strangers in interstitial spaces. She seeks nourishment from traditional Chinese narrative paintings. For her, narrative initiates a way of composing pictorial space rather than provide a literary content. It is a kite that breaks away from the thread, enabling the painting to renounce its origin and become at ease with its own alienation. Drawing underpins her practice, for it makes imagination observable.
