Paul Hamlyn in-conversation with William Feaver

"I spend a lot of time on the Suffolk coast near Ipswich, where long shingle beaches turn to saltwater marsh and then to scrubby woodland interspersed with farmland. I enjoy the blurred lines between land and water, hazy grey sea and grey sky. I use the landscape as a way of thinking about the fundamentals (rock, wood, air, water, up, down, soft, hard, life and non-life) and wonder at the superficial familiarity of the display before me. Except that it’s not entirely before me, I’m part of the landscape too."

Paul Hamlyn was born in Stockport. He studied Fine Arts at St Martins School of Art in 1983 and received an MA from Goldsmiths in 1988. He has lived and worked in Nepal and worked as an illustrator in Europe and the US. Paul is represented by Art Space Gallery in London where he currently lives and works.
