Award-winning film-maker Bruno Wollheim screens his art doc called ‘Portrait’ (25’, 2004). Narrated by Alan Bennett, it records the year-long making of an official portrait by Tom Phillips of Charles Saumarez-Smith, then the newly-departed Director of The National Portrait Gallery. A comedy of manners filmed over one year, it reveals the tensions at the heart of the portrait form. Bruno will discuss film and contemporary portraiture and also show clips from other films he co-directed with Christopher Swayne, including ‘David Hockney: Double Portrait’. ‘Portrait’ is one of eight Channel 4 films about portrait-making to feature in a DVD called ‘In Your Face’, produced by Coluga Pictures in association with The National Portrait Gallery.
