Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) was a great admirer of Titian (c. 1488-1576), a passion he shared with his patron, King Charles I (1600-1649). Van Dyck owned a number of works by Titian, such as the Man with a Blue Sleeve and the Vendramin Family, now both at the National Gallery, London. This talk will explore Titian’s impact on van Dyck, considering van Dyck’s so-called Italian Sketchbook at the British Museum, London, as well as the importance of the works in the collection of Charles I.
