Anna Hawley Jarman

Anna Hawley Jarman studied Contemporary Painting at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen before attending the Royal Drawing School. During her honours year she was awarded a one-year scholarship for a studio space at The Meadowbank Arts Complex in Edinburgh where she began to focus on drawing. The Drawing Year has been a way for Anna to explore methods of drawing in greater depth, while being challenged by working with materials and subject matter that was never previously part of her practise. After taking classes at the National Gallery and British Museum Anna became interested in the representation of the female body throughout the history of art. Through drawing and sculpture she focuses her interest in the body on the depiction of the torso, placing emphasis on its aesthetic appeal as a form possessing a rhythmic unity of line and substance and a psychological appeal founded in our earliest physical needs. What interests Anna is the possibility of creating work which describes the body without literal translation while retaining the power of its original sensory impact.
