Biography
Interweaving images of everyday domesticity, female wrestling, and goblin trickery, you never know what you’re going to find in the work of artist Phoebe Barnicoat. And neither does she. Whether through paint, digital animation or bricolage, her work is a colourful summoning of otherworldliness, alongside life’s absurd banalities.
Hard fought, her images morph restlessly, avoiding a single recognizable style. Through extensive editing, reworking, and often outright destruction, forms and body parts emerge in awkward fragments. Her claustrophobic visions take shape with fervour, raw and aggressive, but streaked through with hints of cheeky humour and tenderness.
