Biography

Julian Vilarrubi studied painting at the Royal Academy Schools where he won the Richard Ford Award for travel in Spain. He has made landscape paintings based on travels in Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Russia and the USA often drawing inspiration from literary figures such as TS Eliot, James Joyce and Siegfried Sassoon.

Julian works both en plein air and in the studio, with drawing being a fundamental aspect of his creative process. He describes drawing as a means to explore his perceptions and emotions, with initial sketches quickly revealing new possibilities and ideas. His drawings, typically completed in a single sitting, capture an understanding and an essence of a moment presented while uncovering unseen elements that gain significance during the process.

In recent years, Julian has embraced digital technology, using the iPad as a drawing tool for figure work. He finds the iPad offers exciting possibilities that can inspire more traditional artistic approaches. His book, "Life Drawing on the iPad," was published by Crowood Press in 2018.

Based in Brighton, Julian continues to work in his studio, undertake commissions, and teach painting and drawing.
