All Change for Autumn Term 2018...

June 26, 2018

After a thriving four years on Oxford Street, our Central studios will sadly be closing after Summer School 2018. The building that houses the studios is being renovated by the landlords and unfortunately the School will be moving out permanently. However as one door closes several others open...

As such we are delighted to announce that we will be moving several of the Central courses to an historic artists’ studio in Chelsea, with the rest of the programme operating from an additional new studio at Charlotte Road, our main campus in Shoreditch, East London.

A selection of the courses previously run from Central including Life Drawing: Colour and Memory on a Tuesday, Life Drawing on a Thursday and The Materials of Drawing: Studio Workshop on a Friday will run from The London Sketch Club, ensuring the School’s continued presence in West London. With high vaulted ceilings and large north-facing windows, this space provides natural light throughout the day. Not far from some of London’s most well-known galleries including the Saatchi Gallery, Tate Britain and the V&A, the studios are a 12 minute walk from Sloane Square Tube station.

In addition we will continue to run all other courses previously at the Central, Oxford Street studios from our new studio in Shoreditch. Located on the third floor of our main building on Charlotte Road, the expansion of Shoreditch will mean we will operate drawing, printmaking and sculpture courses from three large studios and the print room over three floors from Monday - Saturday, and evening courses Monday - Friday.

Shoreditch Drawing in the Street

Courses moving from Central to Shoreditch include Where Drawing Meets Words on a Tuesday, followed by Drawing the Contemporary Portrait in the evening as well as 5-week courses Drawing: Movement and Mind and Drawing: Observation and Imagination on a Friday.  New to the programme is Sculpting a Horse on a Saturday. The top floor studios continue to run a varied programme of observational drawing courses: Life Drawing on a Monday, The Unpredictability of Form: Drawing the Unexpected on a Tuesday and Life Drawing: Human Anatomy on a Thursday are particular highlights this term.

British Museum

Out of House courses take place in galleries, museums and cultural centres across London including the British Museum, Kew Gardens and The National Gallery. These courses also take students out and about in city; to the streets and green spaces, enabling students to work directly from observation on location, seeing the city anew. Challenging Interiors visits the architecturally impressive V&A museum and St Paul's Cathedral on a Monday. Hogarth's London makes a trip to Tate Britain and City Gardens and Greenhouses takes students to The Phoenix Garden, Soho as well as Kew Gardens. Re-Drawing London: City in Transition explores the ever changing nature of London whilst Drawing from the Everyday in the City and from Paintings in the National Gallery alternates between locations each week. Draw from collections and artworks in Rhythm, Form, Space: Drawing from the Collection at the V&ADrawing at the National Gallery and Drawing at the British Museum. Evening course, Nocturnal Interiors explores the city at night.

The School would like to thank everyone who has drawn, studied, taught and worked with us at the Central studios and contributed to making it such a unique space of quiet concentration on Oxford Street with a brilliant atmosphere. The programme led by a combination of Senior Faculty and young contemporary practising artists has seen some of our most innovative and imaginative new courses develop and we look forward to continuing this programme in our new studios. We hope you will enjoy exploring these spaces with us.
