Artist Residencies Open for Applications!
Residencies are a vital and sustaining source of inspiration, productivity and concentration for many artists. The Royal Drawing School is dedicated to providing these opportunities for graduates of The Drawing Year (as well as some students from partner institutions) as they take the leap into professional practice. We have some very exciting new opportunities this year...
New: Monet’s Garden, Giverny, France
This remarkable residency sees one student work from the home and gardens of the painter Claude Monet, supported by The Versailles-Giverny Foundation. The garden is well known for its water lily pond, exuberant, vivid gardens and iconic Japanese footbridge. The Giverny residency offers one RDS Drawing Year alumni a three-month residency, providing the visiting artist a fellowship bursary of $10,000. Application deadline is 5pm GMT Monday 11 December 2023.
New: Archivio Luigi Pericle Residency, Ascona, Switzerland
The residency offers one Royal Drawing School Drawing Year Alumni a two-month residency (May - June) at the Hotel Ascona, home of the Archivio Luigi Pericle. The artists will have access to Luigi Pericle's paintings and graphics, the esoteric library and archives. Application deadline is 5pm GMT Monday 11 December 2023.
Dumfries House, Ayrshire, Scotland
Part-funded residencies are available throughout the year and provide a private studio and self-catering accommodation on the Dumfries House estate for up to four artists at any one time. New etching printmaking facilities are also available to artists in residence. In addition to Royal Drawing School alumni, artists are selected from national and international art institutions including The Glasgow School of Art, RISD and The Yale University School of Art. Application deadline is 5pm GMT Tuesday 14 November 2023.
Borgo Pignano, Tuscany, Italy
The Moritz-Heyman Residency at Pignano near Volterra, Tuscany is open exclusively to Royal Drawing School alumni and tutors. Pignano offers fully funded residencies available throughout the year, lasting two weeks, which include the use of a studio and accommodation on the Borgo Pignano estate. Application deadline is 5pm GMT Tuesday 14 November 2023.
The Hafod Estate, Aberystwyth, Wales
This is a unique opportunity for artists who are interested in working in a rural location, drawing inspiration from the landscape and the natural surroundings of the Welsh countryside. This residency opportunity offers accommodation for two artists with use of a studio for two weeks on the Hafod Estate. Application deadline is 5pm GMT Monday 11 December 2023.
IIFA, India
The IIFA Residency is a three-month long teaching residency in India for four Drawing Year alumni. The residency is kindly supported and facilitated by the International Institute of Fine Arts in Modinagar (IIFA). During the three months the resident teachers will collectively teach IIFA’s Foundation Students and Painting Students alongside IIFA teaching staff. Artists are also given the opportunity for independent travel at the end of the residency. Applications opening in 2024.
Hanover Grange, Jamaica
An opportunity for two alumni to spend two weeks drawing and painting at Hanover Grange, close to Montego Bay on the Island of Jamaica. The property offers a variation of inspiring landscapes from the gardens to beach and jungle. The residency also gives artists the opportunity to meet and work with other local artists who are based in the city of Kingston. Applications opening in 2024.
