Overview

Throughout the course, you'll explore the foundational elements of image-making including colour theory, mark-making, space, composition, and structure, all acting as your instruments for creative expression. Drawing on references from art history and contemporary art, you’ll take inspiration from figurative artists who have reached beyond academic representation to create rich microcosms of their own.

Imagination will be a key part of interpreting the subject, as you investigate image-making as a collision of internal and external experience, embracing the subjective lens through which you encounter the human body. Each session will incorporate not only visual studies but also elements of literature, film, and visual art to deepen your understanding and creative response.

This course draws inspiration from a wide range of artists, from classical masters like Carlo Crivelli and Piero della Francesca to contemporary figures such as Chris Ofili, Nilima Sheikh, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Jean Cocteau, and Antony Cudahy. Each artist will serve as a conceptual foundation for the day's activities, allowing students to explore different artistic techniques, styles, and themes across history.

Who is it for
