Overview

Using the translucency of the media and the white of the paper, students will consider how to illuminate colours and bring light and space into their drawings. Demonstrations in techniques such as colour mixing, glazing layers, flat washes, layering materials and mono-printing will give students knowledge in creating bright, colourful portraits. We will be drawing inspiration from 20th century and contemporary watercolourists such as Cezanne, Gwen John, Matisse, Celia Paul, Diebenkorn, Hockney, Neel and Myerscough.

Using a portrait model students will be led through exercises that put the layering of colours and tones into practice. As well as slower observational studies, participants who feel more confident with the medium will be given the opportunity for more free-wheeling experimentation and faster more intuitive ways of working.
