How can art history become a starting point for making something new?

In this Digital Studio session led by Dexter Orszagh, you will explore how to use an existing image as a way to engage in dialogue with the past. Focusing on Vincent van Gogh’s lithograph 'Burning Weeds', you will experiment with mark-making to capture the textures of the landscape. You will then draw from a clothed model in poses inspired by the figures in the artwork, creating a series of studies. Bringing these elements together, you will play with position and distance to create an original composition of your own.

Each Digital Studio class makes use of the School's multi-camera set-up to create drawing-from-observation opportunities that are only possible online. Tutors offer guidance throughout to help students approach different poses and get the most out of each session.

Please note: online models will not pose nude. Models in this series will be semi-clothed.

Our classes are not recorded and made available to watch later.

Charcoal in a range of thicknesses
Pencils, 4B or softer
Eraser
Cartridge paper in a range of sizes, from A5 to A1
Glue, such as a glue stick or PVA
Masking tape
