Overview

In this session, we will explore the remarkable still lifes of Spanish painter Juan Sánchez Cotán (1560–1627). His compositions of fruit, vegetables and birds are celebrated for their technical precision and meditative nature, set within a larger cosmic framework.

Led by tutor Lindsay Sekulowicz, students will work from set-ups inspired by Cotán’s compositions to understand his use of space, shadow and perspective, as well as the underlying themes in his work. By examining how seemingly humble objects echo the movements of astral bodies, the session will consider Cotán’s practice as both a study in discipline and a meditation on the geometry of the universe.

Each Digital Studio session makes use of the School's multi-camera digital studio to create drawing-from-observation opportunities that are only possible online. Tutors offer guidance throughout to help students approach different poses and get the most out of each session.

Please note: online models will not pose nude. Models in this series will be semi-clothed.
