Monday 19 January, 18.30 - 20.30 - Tone and the Illusion of Light

This two-hour online life drawing session, led by tutor Marcus Cornish, explores how tone — meaning light and shade — shapes what we see and feel in art. Tone refers to the relative lightness or darkness of a surface, playing a vital role in how we perceive form, depth, atmosphere, and emotion. By understanding tone, artists can create the illusion of three-dimensional space, suggest light sources, and convey mood or drama in an image.

We will examine tone from two perspectives: technically, as a way to observe, structure, and build the illusion of light when drawing a subject; and subjectively, as a powerful tool for expression, contributing to the emotional and narrative content of drawing, painting, and sculpture.

Monday 26 January, 18.30 - 20.30 - The Contemporary Portrait

In this two-hour online life drawing session, we will take inspiration from modern and contemporary ink and watercolour portrait artists including Edvard Munch, Marlene Dumas, Lucian Freud and Celia Paul.

Drawing from a model, tutor Rachel Mercer will introduce approaches to working with wet media, encouraging participants to embrace its unpredictability. Through brushwork, bleeding techniques and close observation, we’ll explore how to imbue portraits with energy and life while also attending to the delicacy and finer details of the face.

Monday 2 February, 18.30 - 20.30 - The Essence of the Figure

In this two-hour life drawing session led by tutor Dilip Sur, students will explore drawing as a practice of inquiry, exploration, and discovery — a way to connect more deeply with both subject and self through direct, energetic engagement.

The session invites focus and courage as students respond to a series of fast, dynamic poses from the model, designed to loosen the hand, sharpen the eye and reveal the essence of the figure. These quick studies will be balanced with longer poses, offering time for deeper observation and personal interpretation under Dilip’s expert guidance.

Monday 9 February, 18.30 - 20.30 - Rhythm and Colour

Join us for an online two-hour life drawing session that captures the movement, rhythm, and energy of the party scene. Working with coloured paper and materials, students will explore dynamic compositions inspired by dance, atmosphere, and interaction.

Taking inspiration from artists including Toulouse-Lautrec, Denzel Forrester, Doron Langberg, Christina Kimeze, and Auguste Rodin, this class invites you to experiment with colour, rhythm, and repetition. Expect a playful, expressive set-up, with technology used to create repeated figures and an elaborate scene to draw from.

Guided by tutor Katy Papineau, students will explore how to draw movement in space, using expressive mark-making and tonal contrast to capture fleeting gestures and vivid environments. All levels welcome.

Monday 16 February, 18.30 - 20.30 - Movement and Mind

This live, online drawing session, led by Aude Hérail Jäger, explores the connection between body, movement and mind through drawing. We’ll work in an expressive, meditative way to awaken creative abilities that are innate, direct and intuitive, but often lie dormant unless we consciously activate them.

Together, we’ll use simple strategies to deepen this connection: quieting the mind with breathing exercises, extending the eye–hand connection to the whole body, experimenting with different materials and mark-making, and drawing the model in movement.

Monday 23 February, 18.30 - 20.30 - Watercolour worlds

In this life drawing session, students will explore the fluid nature of wet media to create adventurous and expressive scenes of the figure immersed in different environments.

Inspired by the evergreen subject of the figure in the landscape, explored by artists such as Paul Cezanne, Henri Rousseau, Francis Bacon and Kara Walker - we will use digital technology to submerge the model into worlds that can open our imagination up.

Guided by tutor Nikki Gardham, students will be introduced to expressive methods of using wet media to build imagery and create unique imaginative compositions.

Monday 2 March, 18.30 - 20.30 - Drawing Still Life: Celestial Forms, Earthly Fruits

In this session, we will explore the remarkable still lifes of Spanish painter Juan Sánchez Cotán (1560–1627). His compositions of fruit, vegetables and birds are celebrated for their technical precision and meditative nature, set within a larger cosmic framework.

Led by tutor Lindsay Sekulowicz, students will work from set-ups inspired by Cotán’s compositions to understand his use of space, shadow and perspective, as well as the underlying themes in his work. By examining how seemingly humble objects echo the movements of astral bodies, the session will consider Cotán’s practice as both a study in discipline and a meditation on the geometry of the universe. All levels welcome.

Monday 9 March, 18:30 - 20:30 - Drawing Canines

In this live online session led by tutor Hira Gedikoglu, students will have the unique opportunity to draw both from a live model and a real dog, while exploring the rich folklore and mythologies surrounding dogs. Dogs have long held a powerful place in storytelling across cultures, often appearing as guardians, guides, and companions in moments of transition. This workshop will weave together observational drawing and narrative tradition, inviting students to consider the symbolic resonance of dogs while developing skills to capture their form, movement, and spirit.

Working from the stability of the human model and the natural, constantly shifting poses of the dog, students will be encouraged to embrace quick studies and responsive looking as part of the drawing process. All levels welcome.

Monday 16 March, 18:30 - 20:30 - Life Drawing in Colour

In this online life drawing session led by tutor David Gardner, we will explore the creative possibilities of artificial lighting and how it can transform our approach to the human form. From Caravaggio’s dramatic chiaroscuro to Lucas Samaras’ staged photographs and Euan Uglow’s night-time paintings, we’ll consider how artists have used lighting in bold and inventive ways to illuminate and reimagine the figure.

Working with coloured spotlights and an elaborate set, we’ll experiment with contrasting tones and observe how they affect the body, shifting mood, depth and perspective. All levels welcome.
