Overview

Over the course we will look at wonders such as Yoruba door panels from Nigeria, prehistoric wall paintings, Indian miniatures, Persian ceramic tiles and meso-American sculpture. We’ll think about how diverse image traditions have been responded to in contemporary artists’ practices.

Across the sessions we’ll work with a model, and directly from the source images themselves. We’ll transform what we see into our own visual worlds. Learning to do this we’ll try lots of different strategies: working tiny and private; huge on the floor with sticks; drawing from film; and from memory. The three course tutors will give different perspectives on how they think about, and draw from, the images that inspire them, giving insights as to how we can employ some of these new perspectives and methods to our practices as Artists.

Simply put, if you have a favourite exhibition postcard and often wondered how you might work from it, this course will help you explore this very avenue of inspiration.
