Sculpture and Form
Since the Renaissance, artists have worked between the two areas of sculpture and drawing, looking to one to solve artistic and creative problems in the other. In the twentieth century almost every eminent painter pursued and incorporated sculpture into their practice. For many sculptors there was a need to pursue painting in their practice. There were many painters in the past that you wouldn’t expect who worked in this way, as well as eminent artists of today. This course explores the creative boost provided by the relationship and tension working between a sculptural or three-dimensional rendering of something, and a drawing of it in two dimensions. We will look at this technically and with regards to different creative playful strategies. Working between sculpture and drawing can slightly alter one’s previous formed ways of thinking and connecting with a subject or object chosen from your surroundings. It allows development and spawning of new ideas around your original endeavour as you work between a tactile and illusionistic sensibility. This ten-week course will look at various artists, how they worked and how working between these areas helped their creativity, and through this address some technical issues of drawing sculpturally. The drawings and sculptures from some parts of the course are intended to be expressive whilst others will pursue solidity. All levels welcome, including beginners.
