Overview

There will be demonstrations of materials used in the process of etching: papers, inks, tools, metals and their properties and function. Reference will be made to artists of both the past and present who have used print and drawing as part of their practice including Rembrandt, Anthony Gross, Goya, Katherine Jones, Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach, Kathe Kollwitz and Elizabeth Frink.

Students will be encouraged to bring in a range of their own drawings and sketches to work from and suggested techniques advised upon to translate their work.

Please note: Our Print Room has limited access and etching involves using hazardous chemicals. The print room environment is not suitable for everyone. Etching classes are unsuitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women, those sensitive to chemicals or with breathing difficulties.

Who is it for

Beginners welcome. No experience of drawing required.

What’s provided

For printmaking courses, a fully equipped intaglio print room is provided for students to work with etching, collograph and monoprint.
