Overview
Throughout human history, different cultures have depicted the human body and the world around them in a variety of ways. Through these various representations, we see how different cultures have developed their understanding of reality, their relation to it and the role that the body plays in experiencing the world.
Each week a different theme, artist or process will provide a starting point for reflection for drawing from the selected images and/or from a clothed model. The opportunity to explore a broad range of approaches to a concept, subject or theme will provide a springboard for you to find your own angle. We will be drawing inspiration rather than emulating. We will work from Etruscan Vases to Mexican Ex Votive Paintings. Expect to explore each week’s subject through personal and group enquiry, with consideration given to the motivations behind the work as well as the artist’s approach to materials and the formal aspects of line, tone, scale, mark making and movement.
