Overview

Young artists will focus on creating their own personal dreamscapes on this course.  Students will draw from parks, plants, animals, and their own crafted landscapes, and the clothed life model.

The course will take inspiration from art history, such as the coastlines of Ithell Colquhoun and the lush forests of Henri Rousseau. Young artists will contextualise their drawings alongside contemporary artists who champion landscapes, such as Sanam Khatibi and Wangechi Mutu.

Young artists will take narrative inspiration from writer Italo Calvino and his work Invisible Cities. “…Its green border repeats the dark outline of the buried lake; an invisible landscape conditions the visible one.”

Young artists will create a miniature living landscape from quickly sprouting seeds to draw from. Additionally, students will draw outdoors in the park, from animals, and in the studio from natural forms. Students will focus on narrative, creating original characters inspired by the mythology of the living landscape - sleeping giants in mountains, tree nymphs and water spirits.

All of this work will culminate with a group drawing activity, combining our stories into one huge immersive drawing that will become a life drawing set for our model.

This course is for young artists who are interested in world building, character creation, storytelling, fantasy narratives, and drawing from observation. Students will build their observational skills and gain experience in model making on an immersive scale.

This course will include out of house trips in Zones 1 or 2. A full schedule will be provided in advance. To attend this course, students must have a good level of spoken English. Please note we do not take group bookings for our courses.
