About
This course looks at the challenge of making drawings from large interior and exterior spaces in London with two different approaches.
With Chris, following examples from artists such as Wenscelaus Hollar, Sharon Beavan, John Virtue and Laura Grace Ford, students will be introduced to different ways of exploring space through drawing, such as panoramas, moving points of view, and journeys from place to place. Students will work from direct observation, at various locations, making large drawings on site allowing for an experimental, and at times conceptual, response to specific buildings or outdoor public space.
With Jeanette, students will work on a series of sketches and drawings on location in a single large interior space throughout the course. They will be encouraged to gather a wide range of visual information, enabling them to develop a larger drawing away from the location in their own time, should they wish to do so. To support this process, students will be introduced to a variety of ways in which artists have approached architectural themes. They will also undertake imaginative and spatial drawing exercises designed to encourage a personal and inventive approach to their final drawing.
Location & timetable
Occasionally locations/meeting points may need to change so please check your emails the night before classes are due to take place and bring your mobile phone with you on the day so that the administrator can contact you if need be. It is also very important that you arrive punctually (in time for the class to begin at 10am) for each class as the class will usually move away from the meeting point quite quickly at the beginning of the day.

Materials
Students should only bring materials that are able to carried comfortably. Some days can involve a lot of walking so appropriate clothing is encouraged - waterproofs and an umbrella or sun cream depending on the weather and comfortable shoes. Please carry a bottle of water.

Sketchbooks & long thin paper (wide format)

Drawing board and paper - A2 for preference but larger than sketchbook.

Graphite stick or putty

Gouache/watercolour, colourful inks (small bottle with pipette).
A2 foam board or an A1 sheet scored and folded to A2 to make a folder and be used as an A1 board when opened.
Please note that no wet materials, such as ink, are allowed in the British Museum. You are also not permitted to bring craft knives or sharp objects. Dry materials such as graphite sticks are a good material addition for tonal work.
Stools are available within.
Other material suggestions may be given over the duration of the course.
Please do not bring large bags along to the museum.
What to expect
There will be a one-hour lunch break generally between 1 - 2pm each day and regular breaks throughout the day.
