Summer School 2024 - Starts 1 July

One-week courses offer the opportunity to invest in your practise over an intensive 5-days in our studios, online or out in London's streets, parks or galleries.

Each course allows the opportunity to immerse yourself in drawing, painting, printmaking or sculpture. Joining one of our courses is a chance to spend quiet time in a creative flow, slowing down and making thoughtful marks on the page, etching plate, canvas or clay.

Summer School 2024

The Drawing Marathon
Taking place just once a year and taught by over 20 different members of the Royal Drawing School's faculty, students will be able to curate their own programme of drawing sessions from those on offer each day: drawing from life models, dancers and acrobats in the studio, in sketchbooks on the streets of London, and from art in galleries and museums.

Challenge the way you see. Draw on our intensive Drawing Marathon.

Life Painting

Painting by Jessie Makinson

Life Painting

This course offers a rare and valuable opportunity to paint from the life model in a sustained pose for the duration of the week. You will be introduced to the artist’s palette (pigments, colour mixing, tonal and temperature value) and formal aspects such as space, composition, and pictorial structure. One-to-one tuition will be given, and all levels of painting experience are welcome, including beginners.

Anticipation of youth

Drawing by Viola Wang

Children's Book Illustration

In this course we will investigate the visual potential of children's books, taking inspiration from exemplary picturebooks, both historical and contemporary, investigating genres and approaches including political allegory, fable, lists, the mundane, surreal dream narrative, and books that broach difficult subject matter. The course will include a mix of discussion, quick exercises and structured experiments, with students working towards developing one of these into a personal project to share with the group at the end of the week.
