How does a style come into being? Has it always happened in the same way, or did modernism make something else of it? Should a style evolve naturally, as the product of a particular artist’s temperament and the culture to which he belongs, or should it be cultivated? How conscious are we – and how conscious is it useful to be – of our own personal styles? And how does a style ultimately affect the qualities of an artwork?
