Marking Out the Space: The Drawing of Andrew Vass
Georges Braque: 'What the painter attempts is not to reconstitute an anecdote, but to constitute a pictorial event'. With this in mind, the talk will explore some aspects of the dynamic between the model or motif, the artist's eye and hand, and his bodily presence. It will do so principally by looking at the drawings and dry-points of Andrew Vass, an English artist in his early fifties, whose work - though mainly conducted before the motif - gives an engagingly complex sense to what it might mean for a drawing to be 'representational'.
