Artwork gallery Water
Water is a difficult thing to depict. Because of its transparent, formless nature, it can be hard to know where to begin. Water-based materials such as watercolour and gouache are often used to capture its qualities. Pictorially, water is a powerful device for reflection: in Caravaggio’s ‘Narcissus’, for instance, it creates a deeper sense of introspection. It is as if water allows us to see ourselves more clearly, reflected in another space.
