Overview

Across cultures and millennia, animals—both real and imagined—have served as powerful symbols, companions, and artistic muses. From sacred ritual objects to mythic creatures and contemporary interpretations, depictions of animals reflect our evolving relationship with the natural world.

In this online course, we’ll travel from the Ice Age to the present day, exploring how artists across time and place have visualised animals. Using this rich history as inspiration, you’ll be encouraged to respond creatively through your own drawing practice.

Over the week, we’ll journey through air, land, and water-and into the imagination-experimenting with fresh approaches to process, materials, and sound. You’ll draw from observation and imagination, using a wide range of reference points including sculpture, film, anatomy, and life. Whether responding to birdsong with mark-making or painting with feathers, this course invites playful exploration of movement, texture, and essence through the animal form.
