Inspired by the National Gallery’s collection of over 2,300 paintings from the 13th to the 19th centuries, students will draw from the figure, explore landscape, portraiture and mythology in art.
Spring Term courses will open for booking on Thursday 29 October at midday.
Led by practicing artists, this course will encourage young artists to explore and develop key drawing techniques and skills. For the duration of this course, young artists will draw from observation in public galleries and on occasion, work outside.
Young artists will be encouraged to develop their artistic voice and observation skills by closely engaging with artworks on display at the gallery. This will offer them practical ways to encounter and understand art made by others. Additionally, through the process of drawing and sustained observation, students will learn how artworks are constructed.
Tutor will introduce fresh exercises each week, as well as diverse influences to keep the course vibrant and creatively charged. Alongside technical skills, students will develop critical thinking, problem solving, and collaborative abilities – all of which are key components to a confident and curious art practice.
Students will build skills that allow them to explore their creativity outside the curriculum while building a portfolio of high-quality work that supports their progress in arts education.
Who is it for
Students aged 15 – 18 (or in school years 10 – 13) who have a passion for drawing and a desire to improve their skills.
This course is particularly useful for those making portfolios for applications to art and design courses at University level. Many universities specially ask for examples of observational drawings. Our tutors can offer help and advice with applications.
